7 Jul 2025Final Fantasy IX 25th Anniversary: New Merch & Remake Hopes

Zidane, Vivi, Garnet, Steiner, Freya… they weren’t just characters, they were companions. Each one carried doubts, loss, quiet tragedies. Vivi, with his gentle soul and that question about what it means to exist; Garnet, trying to find her voice (both literally and figuratively); and Zidane, with his carefree swagger hiding something much heavier underneath. FFIX was a story about death, identity, and fate… but it never forgot joy. It reminded us that even in the darkest worlds, there’s room for light, for friendship, for love.

Final Fantasy IX - Remake
And here we are, 25 years later celebrating the anniversary of one of the best games of all time. Over the past few years, there have been persistent rumors about a potential remake, fueled in part by the infamous Nvidia leak and a few cryptic hints from Square Enix. Nothing official has been confirmed yet, but the possibility alone has sparked excitement in the community. There was also talk of an animated series in development, aimed at introducing Final Fantasy IX to a younger audience. It was announced back in 2021, but since then, updates have been scarce. Whether it’s still in the works or quietly shelved remains to be seen, but the fact that the IP is even being revisited says a lot about its lasting appeal.
Anniversary merchandising
Regarding all these rumors, square enix has launched new merch to celebrate this special ocassion. As part of the 25th anniversary, they've released a fresh wave of official Final Fantasy IX products. From beautifully detailed figures of Zidane, Vivi, and Garnet to plushies, pins, keychains, and art prints, there's a little something for every type of collector. One of the highlights is the Vivi Ornitier human size hat. There are also anniversary-themed items like mugs, apparel, and even a new set of character-themed accessories that bring a modern touch to the classic designs.

Vivi Ornitier Story Book
This merch needs a special mention because it gives us some background about Vivi Ornitier life. The book, Vivi and Grandpa On the Day of Departure, written by Kazuhiko Aoki and illustrated by original character designer Toshiyuki Itahana, offers a touching look at the relationship between Vivi and his adoptive grandfather, Quan. It explores their quiet life before Vivi’s journey begins and fills in some emotional (and unexpected) details.
One of the most curious revelations is how Vivi got his name. According to the story, Quan used to mark Vivi’s height on the wall using Roman numerals—VI VI—which eventually became his name. But there’s more to it than just a sweet naming story. Quan, being a Qu, initially took Vivi in with the intention of fattening him up to eat him. He measured his height regularly for that reason but over time, Vivi didn’t grow much (he stayed at that exact height). Eventually, Quan gave up on the idea of eating him... and instead raised him as family.
