BRIEF SYNOPSIS

Set in Clarksdale, Mississippi, in 1932, during the Jim Crow era, the film follows twin brothers Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore (both played by Michael B. Jordan). After working in Chicago for the Al Capone's mafia, they return to their hometown with stolen money and the intention of opening a juke joint in an old sawmill. Their goal is to create a safe space for the African American community, but their plans are threatened by an ancient evil.

And that's as far as we can go with the Synopsis! We can't say anything more, but trust us, it gets VERY interesting and original.

ANALYSIS AND CONTROVERSY

It's interesting how the film blends horror with African American origins, set in an era marked by racial hatred and the Ku Klux Klan. Sounds of Africa, voodoo (Hoodoo, actually), and history are interwoven into a horror movie that doesn't shy away from mixing these concepts.

One of the many controversies stems from the fact that by mixing fantasy with a harsh part of history, it inadvertently softens or minimizes the real history, giving precedence to the fantastical fiction of what is, despite being unique, still a horror film.

What we really loved about it, technically speaking, is how original the film feels, and it knows it. It's not going unnoticed (nor will it), and it's the kind of movie that compels you to watch it. Whether you like it or not, love it or hate it, one thing's for sure: it won't leave you indifferent.
